Offset press projects

After we have learned about the various printing methods we have spent time learning how offset press production works. We currently have an AB Dick 9810 sheet fed press in our classroom. Students begin by creating a one color memo pad project on the machine. They are introduced to not only the machine but some of the equipment used in the bindery department. The students can create 2, 3, or 4 different memo pads of various sizes. Each memo pad needs to incorporate text and graphics into the layout. Students learn how to use the guillotine paper cutter and properly pad the paper creating the memo pad.

Once the students have a basic idea of how to run the press, they design and produce their own notebook paper which is comb bond. This project introduces the students to two sided printing and beginning to register their press sheets for proper alignment. Once the students work the paper using the work and tumble format they comb bind the notebooks together. Link to student examples

For the final press project the students create an original 12 page story, illustrate the book and produce 50 copies of the completed booklet. This project gives students not only the press experience, but they understand how Indesign (industry standard software) is used to create layouts including master page elements, page numbers, pagination, importing text and flowing text, and working with graphical elements. Students learn about collating, trimming, saddle stitching, and proper folding techniques.
